In 1938 the chemist Albert Hofmann became the first psychonaut to enter LSD inner-space. On April 19th Hofmann dropped a heroic 250 micrograms of lysergic acid diethylamide from his lab at Sandoz Pharmaceuticals at exactly 4:20 PM. He soon realized how strong a dose he had taken and fled the premises on the only civilian vehicle permitted in wartime Switzerland—a bicycle!
The details of Hofmann’s bicycle ride home have become LSD legend. In 1985 a psychology professor at Northern Illinois University named Thomas B. Roberts organized the inaugural “Bicycle Day” celebration to commemorate Dr. Hofmann’s first *intentional* trip into LSD inner-space (he had *unintentionally* launched himself there a few days before when he absorbed some into his hands while working in the lab).
Bicycle Day celebrations have since spread around the world. It has become a holiday for psychonaunts and enthusiasts of acid culture. A day to drop acid or soberly just appreciate the cultural and artistic legacy of LSD.
