Join artist and filmmaker Julie Weitz for a presentation about her latest project Doikayt (Hereness) in which she will stage performances of Yiddish folkloric characters at Jewish sites across Eastern Europe to explore themes of loss and healing through a diasporic lens.

On Thursday November 10th, Weitz will introduce her new performance art characters of the dybbuk (a possessed spirit), tzadik (a mystical figure), and goylem (a clay creature). She will also screen a new film (work-in-progress) based on her experiences in the forests of Poland, Lithuania, and California, and the underlying violence that persists within them.

Weitz is a Los Angeles-based visual artist whose performance art practice responds to local surroundings with an attuned sensory awareness of ecological and historical context. Her work has been exhibited at the Contemporary Jewish Museum (San Francisco, CA), Torrance Museum of Art (Torrance, CA), Lambert Center for the Arts (NYC, NY), Jewish Museum of Maryland (Baltimore, MD), and Judisches Museum (Augsburg, Germany). She is a Wallis Annenberg Helix Fellow at Yiddishkayt, and a 2020-21 Cultural Trailblazer of the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Weitz currently teaches in Los Angeles and is a regular contributor to Contemporary Art Review Los Angeles.
