Welcome to July’s selection of 16mm film tasties, always a journey through time and space.
This Friday’s screening will be full of contrasts: clarity and confusion, brashness and sensitivity, level-headedness and light-headedness. It’s all true.
-Very Nice, Very Nice. a ripping roll of still images and voices from 1961. director Arthur Lipsett lets his subjects wonder the where and why of their generation.
-Pigs vs. Freaks. a football game between cops and hippies in 1975 in East Lansing Michigan. Weirdo Americana snapped up by a documentary filmmaker.
-Begone Dull Care. Norman McLaren does just that in this 1949 animation made without cameras, directly on film.
-Protest: Prohibition and Pot. informational and entertaining doc from 1971. Somehow, I think they all got it wrong.
-The Rainbow Bear. an animated psychedelic hay ride from 1970.
Intermission:
-Motion Painting, an early creator of “visual music”, Oskar Fischinger made this one in 1947 animating paint on glass. A great copy from the Pratt.
-Sounds in the Silent Deep. film production company, the Moody Institute manages to create a stylish documentary about hydro-accoustics, and then twist it into a moralistic tale about bicycles. WTF?
-Queer Birds. early 1965 animation from Czech studios: Kratky Film. Like the birds, this simple and curious film is both fascinating and confounding. great early electronic soundtrack.
-Adventures of a Baby Fox: a Story in Rhyme. this b/w live action story is just so lovely, it should soften even the hardest of asses. ahhhhh.
-the Three Robbers. a wonderful little story by Tomi Ungerer, made great by the vocal soundtrack of Gene Deitch.
