Join us for a special preview screening of Seaweed Stories in partnership with Lonely Whale and RETI Center.
SEAWEED STORIES by Jake Sumner. 2024. 30 min.
Narrated by Forest Whitaker, Seaweed Stories is a vibrant, global look at the wonders of seaweed, and some of the extraordinary stories and characters whose lives have been entangled by this often overlooked marine plant which may hold answers to some of humanity’s biggest challenges. Seaweed Stories includes insights from a Silicon Valley startup creating plastic alternatives from algae, to the Indigenous Shinnecock Kelp Farmers using seaweed to prove their sovereign right to coastal land, to a scientist in South Korea supporting seaweeds’ sexual reproduction to create new species that can withstand the effects of a changing climate.
Post-screening discussion with filmmaker Jake Sumner; Tim Gilman, RETI Center Director of Strategic Partnerships; and Sam Fleischner, Rockaway Film Festival Artistic Director.
Doors will open at 6:30pm. The screening will start at 7pm.
Operating on a barge in Gowanus Bay, the RETI Center is a model for how coastal cities can combine environmental justice, social responsibility, and innovative design to adapt to a changing climate.
Lonely Whale has spearheaded impactful global movements to raise awareness and offer alternatives to problematic plastics, convened a consortium of multi-national brands to create the first global network of ocean-bound plastic supply chains, and supported the global youth movement with the tools and network needed to advance their efforts to secure a future with clean seas.
*Please note: this screening will take place outdoors, on a floating barge. In the event of rain, we may unfortunately have to cancel.
