Somos de aqui, somos de allá: A Free Poetry Workshop for BIPOC Creatives

Join us at this month's Community Verse, a PSNY initiative designed specifically by & for BIPOC creatives, with Aurelia Luciano!

Somos de aqui, somos de allá is a writing workshop created to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. We will be highlighting the usage of Spanglish to tell our stories and honor our first and second generation latinidad through poetry and music. There is power in telling the story of your roots using the tongue of our parents, grandparents, and their homelands, while infusing it with the language of a new place, with its own primary language. In this workshop, we will navigate the stories of poets and musicians who recount their memories multilingually while also incorporating these beloved languages into our own poetry.

This workshop is not limited to people who only speak Spanish & Spanglish, rather it is meant to be an open space for people of all backgrounds and languages to explore their homelands and mother tongues together with an emphasis on Spanish & Spanglish in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month! All BIPOC people with any language knowledge are welcome to join!

We are from here; we are also from there.

About the instructor: Aurelia Luciano (@goldenlightpoetry) is a Dominican American poet that writes about life as a millennial black, Latinx woman. Aurelia goes by the alias ‘Golden Light Poetry’ as both her first and last name translate into ‘A Golden Light’. In 2021, Aurelia began sharing her work with the world through organizations like JC Art Productions, NJ Theatre Alliance, and publications with Olney Magazine and the Jersey Journal. Most recently, Aurelia has begun infusing her sublime poetry into colorful, handmade, & watercolor painted poetry, art prints, and bookmarks while also offering event planning consultations to provide wholesome, informative event outlines and experiences for others seeking to acquire knowledge in hosting and curating high vibrational events. Aurelia is a community event host/curator, caregiver, single mother to a rockstar and the light of her own life. She resides in northern NJ and is currently working on her debut poetry book, Evergreen.

This workshop is taught by and for Black, Indigenous, and other Persons of Color with an interest in poetry. We invite folks to connect in this safe, generative, BIPOC-centered space: to share work, experiences, and discourse. At the end of every workshop, we welcome the sharing of resources, such as literature, community events, and grants available for application. Respectfully and consensually connecting with other members outside of the space is encouraged. If you are not BIPOC-identifying, we kindly invite you to attend other PSNY events. While topics do not necessarily center around being BIPOC, this community space is designed specifically for the BIPOC experience. Attendees of our Monthly Free Workshops for BIPOC Creatives receive a 50% off discount code for our Weekly Virtual Workshops!
