Inspired by Freddie deBoer’s prescient 2017 essay, Planet of Cops, this program surveys the diverse ways that filmmakers past and present explore the steady normalization of the “kind of panoptic horror where we all engage in pitiless mutual surveillance” in which “Everyone's a detective in the Division of Problematics, and they walk the beat 24/7.”

Featured in this group are Jeron Braxton’s 2018 animated short film Octane and Affonso Uchôa’s 2019 medium length hybrid film Sete Anos Em Maio (Seven Years in May). In Octane, Braxton utilizes a 32-bit Playstation 1 racing game aesthetic to “highlight how consumption is a very political activity,” drawing focus to “the modern commodification of black bodies” through a surreal landscape of bright hyper colors and dark American symbology. In Sete Anos Em Maio, Uchôa, along with protagonist/co-writer Rafael Rocha and co-writer/editor João Dumans, crafts a brilliant experiment in the hybrid documentary form, blending re-enactment, direct address and allegory in a spiky examination of the police brutality common in Brazil during the presidency of left-wing Luiz Ignácio Lula da Silva.

The total program will include five films.

SHADOW KITCHEN is a small LA-based filmmakers co-op that resides over at the Coaxial Arts space in DTLA. We run a variety of monthly events to build community among our local cadre of independent and experimentally oriented filmmakers including screenings, process workshops, panels, and the odd party.
