Live fast die young icon Rainer Werner Fassbinder churned out 40 films and 24 plays in his fleeting 37 years on this green earth. Don’t dwell on it.
So it’s hard to place QUERELLE, a radical departure in many ways from most of his work and a trail connecting metropolis to sun-soaked seaside in others. Was it a new direction? A one-off stylistic exploration? In a career spanning brain-bending science fiction, lush chamber dramas, realist work both cruel and optimistic, and so much more, we’ll probably never know. But what we do know is that Fassbinder’s final outing — he passed just three weeks into the editing process — is a gloriously erotic, troubling, and beautiful phantasmagoria.
Populated by meaty Tom of Finland sailors, balletic brawlers, sex-soaked degenerate gamblers, bawdy graffiti scrawlers, and glory hole gobblers, QUERELLE dances along like a dream you’d beg to fall asleep to every night. Its super-saturated color gels, sunset sound stages, and cock towers create a totally separate and totally enthralling world where desire — desperate, repressed, fulfilled, ravenous, sublimated — is the coin of the realm.
Leave the world behind and try on QUERELLE’s for size! Best-dressed sailor gets… well, we’ll work that out together ⚓️
