Intro to Drum Synthesis

Portland, Oregon
Free - $22.46 (includes all fees)

Join us as we dive into crafting percussion from scratch! This workshop will introduce how drum sounds are made, both in principle and in practice. We'll explain the conceptual contrast between drum synthesis and sample-based percussion, highlighting the pros and cons of each. We'll explain how the uniquely flexible nature of synthesis allows for creative opportunities, both in composition and performance, that would be inconvenient if not impossible using a sample-based approach.

We'll analyze the physics and perception of striking drums, cymbals, and other real life objects, and show how their patterns of vibration can inform the patterns of voltage that comprise synthesis. We'll identify several component elements of a drum sound and match them to simple synthesis techniques that create an analogous effect.

We will explore several specific archetypal drum sounds that permeate electronic music history, noting their origins as implemented in classic hardware drum machines, then dissecting how each sound is made. This breakdown of common drum patches will illustrate how the fundamental techniques of synthesizing percussion are combined to create a complete sound

At the end of the presentation we will discuss how these commonly used simple techniques can be recombined in myriad ways to create your own percussive sound designs from scratch.

After the presentation we'll have time for hands-on exploration with stations set up that demonstrate different drum patches on modular synths, semi-modular synths, keyboard synths, hardware drum machines, VST plugins, ipad synths, and more. You'll be able to explore the concepts brought up earlier in the workshop and turn theory into practice. We'll provide guided instruction which helps you get started making your own drum sounds

-----

This intermediate workshop teaches the fundamentals of drum synthesis which is basic for those familiar with synths but can be complex if you are new to synthesis. Some general background knowledge regarding synthesis/gear terminology, concepts, and techniques will be assumed and will not be covered during the presentation (but any questions are encouraged during the second portion of the workshop that's hands on in small groups). If you are new to synths and don't mind some material going over your head you are certainly welcome to attend! Neither a traditional background in music nor a familiarity with acoustic drums/percussion is necessary to attend.

The 2 hour workshop will be split into sections. During the first section (90 minutes) our instructors will give a talk discussing principles of drum synthesis and demonstrating with audio, software, and hardware examples. During the second section (30 minutes) we will break out into small groups for interactive hands-on instruction and drum synthesis in practice.
