Join us for a discussion of Print, Production & Publishing Practices in Japan and NYC with Neutral Colors, Small Editions and Secret Riso Club.
Small Editions launched the How to Book project in 2020 as a resource for independent publishers, aiming to increase transparency around production, distribution, payment structures, and bookmaking practices. Since the publication of the U.S. edition, the project has expanded internationally, with editions produced in Japan and Berlin—highlighting both the shared methodologies of independent publishing and the ways these practices shift across cultural and geographic contexts.
For How to Book in Japan, Neutral Colors, an independent Riso and offset-printed magazine based in Yokohama, took on the role of editor. This panel continues that dialogue, exploring which print and production methods are shared between NYC and Japan, what differs, and what these distinctions can teach us about independent publishing today.
