Immerse yourself in blotter art and culture with BLOTTER BATH: a rock music sound bath and blotter art light show with guided meditation and ritual.

Join psychonaut Erik Davis Ph. D. (author of Blotter: The Untold Story of An Acid Medium, The MIT Press 2024) for an immersive journey into blotter art.

“Blotter art” is a psychedelic folk art form born on the sheets of LSD blotter paper amidst the consciousness-expanding counterculture of the 1960s and 70s.

Enjoy three sets of music, including the enactment of Psychedelic Severence, or "The Chöd Set" (see description below)...

Doors open at 6 p.m. for a pre-show book signing party with Dr. Erik Davis featuring live soundscapes by Jonah Sollins Devlin and preliminary meditations.

At 7 p.m., we take off, with Erik as a guide, into the Blotter-verse for an eye-open immersive meditation with blotter and psychedelic light art projections, and original music performances by the Garcia Peoples, Kendraplex, experimental jazz vibraphonist Chris Dingman, and Isaiah Mitchell (Earthless).

Light artists Bubba Ayoub, Aubrey Nehring, Yosuh Jones, and Moonhawk Roper will splash the walls with iconic blotter art and visual abstractions.

Disorganizer Jesse Jarnow will pull pranks from behind the scenes, while Lama Justin and Doc Kelley will handle the rites and rituals.

Exercise your cognitive liberty and take a trip with Psychedelic Sangha at the iconic Judson Memorial Church in the heart of Greenwich Village, in the City of New York.

The Chöd Set (aka, “Psychedelic Severance”)
An avant-garde electric guitar set inspired by the Tibetan Buddhist practice of Chöd; and performed by Isaiah Mitchell with Lama Justin von Bujdoss and visuals by Arik Moonhawk Roper

Chöd, meaning “sever” or “cut” in Tibetan, is a Vajrayana Buddhist practice that aims to sever ego fixation through a skillful combination of nondual philosophy—“emptiness”—with lurid visualizations of one’s own bodily dismemberment, and in some versions, offering one’s body to flesh eating demons.

The practice was originally started in Tibetan by a female mystic named Machik Lapdrön sometime around the 11th or 12th century. Pracitioners of Chöd were renown for performing it inside charnal grounds, where the site of rotting corpses would further enhance their visceral sensory experience.

Chöd practice takes many different forms that variously incorporate music, singing, dancing, and artwork. The Chöd Set (or "Psychedelic Severance”) will be performed as part of the Blotter Bath at Judson Memorial Church on May 3rd.

Psychedelic Sanghs is very grateful to guitarist Isaiah Mitchell, Lama Justin von Bujdoss, and Arik Moonhawk Roper for lending their courage and expertise to this project—Thank you!

About the book
"Blotter is the first comprehensive written account of the history, art, and design of LSD blotter paper, the iconic drug delivery device that will perhaps forever be linked to underground psychedelic culture and contemporary street art. Created in collaboration with Mark McCloud’s Institute of Illegal Images, the world’s largest archive of blotter art, Davis’s boldly illustrated exhibition treats his outsider subject with the serious, art-historical respect it deserves, while also staying true to the sense of play, irreverence, and adventure inherent in psychedelic exploration.”
