LAMINARIA: A Folk Horror Music Suite

LAMINARIA (the Latin word for Kelp) is a 45 minute Folk Horror Suite evoking images of an underwater shadow ghost emerging from the deep sea. The live performance utilizes an orchestra of 10 live musicians including strings, brass, woodwinds and live foley sound effects.

Kelp, a plant used medicinally to induce labor in people seeking abortion serves as a catalyst for this hauntingly provocative story frame which explores the cycle of birth-death and the need to break free from the demons which confine our bodies in every day society.

LAMINARIA, written by Concetta Abbate, was supported by New Music USA’s Creator Development Fund with support in part from the Howard Gilman Foundation, The Amphion Foundation, The Cheswatyr Foundation, The ASCAP Foundation, the BMI Foundation, The Sorel Organization, and the Alice M. Ditson Fund of Columbia University. Support for New York-based artists is provided by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature, and/or the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Support for the Creator Development Fund is also provided by contributions from the New Music USA endowment.
