Psychedelic Sadhana is our practice-based series. Currently we are facilitating a Vajrasattva study group aimed at learning the practice in preparation for empowerment.
Vajrasattva is a powerful Buddhist purification practice that we believe is even more efficacious when combined with a psychedelic.
In his book Secret Drugs of Buddhism (Synergetic Press 2019), Mike Crowley argues that deity yoga practices, like Vajrasattva, originally involved a sacrament called amṛta that he contends was probably psilocybe cubensis (a psychedelic mushroom that grows out of cow dung in India).
The amṛta that is used nowadays in deity yoga is symbolic and contains no psychoactive ingredients. And while books and teachings on Vajrasattva can be easily found on the web, there are no obvious instructions for how to actually do the practice with a psychedelic sacrament. Hence the very exciting challenge and mandate of Project Vajrasattva is figuring how to put the amṛta back into practice!
This group project is open to anyone looking to familiarize themselves with the essential elements of Tibetan Buddhist Vajrasattva sādhanā practice in preparation for empowerment.
