Filmmakers Jessica Kingdon’s and Nathan Truesdell’s inquisitive films have been exploring the paradoxes of the everyday for almost a decade. Their eventual meeting and collaboration resulted in ASCENSION (2021), a feature documentary on hyper consumerism in modern China that just received a 2022 Oscar nomination! Join us at Shadow Kitchen this month as we take a look back at their earlier works.
Included in our program are Kingdon’s early examinations of place, and interspecies relationships with PIG ROAST, and LOOKING AT ANIMALS. Truesdell’s keen editing of repurposed news, promotional, and reality footage reveal the horrors and unintentional consequences of the spectacle in BALLOONFEST and THE WATER SLIDE.
For their later works, we delve into the inner workings of capitalism with Kingdon’s “Commodity City,” and Truesdell’s “Art of Making Money” series. Our program culminates with their first directorial collaboration on “It’s Coming,” an unflinching look at the globalized commodification of companionship.
