DESCRIPTION
Zero waste pattern drafting approaches the garment making process in reverse; the marker dictates the pattern pieces which interconnect like giant puzzles so that no waste is produced in conjunction with the garment. In contrast, traditional patterning wastes 15% of textiles, which cumulates exponentially as billions of garments are manufactured annually. Divest from the exploitive, extractive, and manipulative fashion industry and learn to make your own zero waste clothing from found materials that you already own, based on your body and your needs.

REQUIREMENTS
No pattern drafting experience required. Sewing experience is encouraged.

Bring a notebook, pencil or pen, and any pattern drafting/garment making tools they might have: rulers, L-squares, French curves, measuring tape, fabric scissors, pins, needle, thread, etc.

Bring material to work with such as bed sheets, light weight blankets, deadstock and/or textile remnants.

If you have a portable sewing machines and/or sergers, which can be easily transported, bring it along too!

***
Janelle Abbott (JRAT) was born into the fashion industry—her parents owned a clothing manufacturing company where they produced Tencel garments in Seattle for over 20 years. This early exposure to the behind the scenes of garment production gave Janelle a sense of reverence for the labor involved in creating clothing. She received a BFA in fashion design from Parsons School of Design in 2012. In the face of the exploitive labor and environmental damage perpetrated by corporate fashion, Janelle decided to carve her own path—one committed to upcycling, sustainability, hand craft, and the zero waste design methodology. Densely pleated, boldly clashing, and unexpectedly rhythmic, Janelle’s work is scrappy, unapologetic, and a testament to just how much time and energy it takes for real humans to manufacture and produce every consumer product we engage with.
