Varispeed

$6.63 - $27.74 (includes all fees)

Varispeed showcases ambient and experimental sound artists in unique acoustic environments around the city. Inspired by the playback-altering tool, I invite you to join us for a night of durational sets that extend above and beyond the infrasonic.

Performers: Deuén, DJ Sour, Angel Burner

Deuén (They/Them) Once described as “something one might hear before they pass,” Deuén shimmers between dreams and reality. Their “rnb concrète,” weaves metallic production, bass, and reverb-coated, grunge-esque vocals into unusual and tender melodies. Existing in the in-between, Deuén explores the memory that blurs pleasure and pain, vulnerability and presence: from a broken mirror to a hesitant kiss or the sunlight that cuts the trees, their practice is an ode to the moments that make life worth living. They recently participated in Mexican Summer’s recording residency and have performed and showcased work at Slut Island Festival, Montez Press Radio, Creative Code Art, Stone Circle Theatre, Laboratory Spokane, Made in Media Center NY, and St. Marks Church.

Brooklyn native DJ Sour is known for his finesse behind the decks, pairing classic club sounds with curveball bangers. Recent DJ performances have featured hard-edge and melodic tracks, exploring the boundaries between pulse, rhythm, and melody, and have always included deep cut selections from his extensive catalog of unreleased productions. His label, Sour Sound Records, doesn’t discriminate against excellence and has been releasing a wide variety of high quality dance music for over four years. Other accolades include his previous Friday residency at Rash NYC, curating lineups for PSYOP and Boom Boom Revolution, and radio mixes for, Piñata Radio, Club Cringe, and more.

Angel Burner is a curator, composer, and sonic sculptor focused on sub bass. They currently organize Varispeed, a New York-based sonic performance platform dedicated to exploring the relationship between long-form auditory experiences and subsonic frequencies. Additionally, Angel Burner is part of a sound and movement performance duo with Laila Rosen based in Brooklyn, NY. Their collaborative work began with “calyxx” (June 2022), “(echo) and so,” (August 2023) which premiered at Fridman Gallery, “like an angel dipped in motor oil” at INTIMA (February 2024), “inter” debuted at Kaleidoscope (August 2024), and most recently they installed “SPKRTWR” at MOLAR (April 2025). Angel Burner does live sound across the city, working for venues such as Elsewhere, Basement NY, Knockdown Center, ISSUE Project Room, Artists Space, Market Hotel, Trans Pecos, and Fridman Gallery.

...

Sub bass feels like an epicenter, a pulsing heartbeat, the tectonic plates shifting to the rhythm of music. It’s something that is felt deeper than the eardrums: it rattles in our skulls; in the I-beams holding up the walls around us; omnidirectionally around the speakers themselves. This is an inherently shared experience, since subsonic vibrations move around and through all physical objects and bodies in a room. The mission of Varispeed is to create a space dedicated to the depths of sound in collaboration and community with fellow artists and art workers, to create a moment to hear/feel together.
