LA-based independent filmmaker and artist Alex Tyson has a documentary filmmaking practice. His work has interrogated subjects such as carceral firefighting, conflict minerals, and the economies surrounding active volcanoes. Most recently his exploration has taken a turn to narrative filmmaking to explore the medium of documentary itself.
THE REGISTRY (originally commissioned by @sheffdocfest and most recently screened virtually by @memory.is ) is an elliptically structured psychological horror that explores some of the ethical concerns of non-fiction: the afterlives of images of war and their fictional representation, tokenization of stories and subjects by the film industry, and the potential dilemmas of the commercialization of stock footage.
For this month’s Shadow Kitchen we will dive into an exploration of documentary with Alex Tyson, watching excerpts of his work and furthering this exploration in an “artist talk” (of sorts).
