A Generational Monsoon (2024) is an evening-long composition for chamber ensemble and electronics. Sonically and conceptually, the piece is inspired by the complex relationship of drought and deluge exemplified in the North American Monsoon (NAM) season. This relationship is one that, as a result of climate change, is trending toward exacerbated extremities. The NAM monsoon season provides much of the American Southwest (Arizona, New Mexico, parts of northern Mexico) with approximately 50 percent of the region’s yearly rainfall amounts. Which is an absolute necessity for all lifeforms that inhabit the area. With global temperatures continuing to rapidly rise, it is not unlikely that instability and extreme weather conditions will also rise.

Over the 100 minute duration, the piece weaves through gradients of lush and vibrant surges and poignant periods of quiet and silence. A Generational Monsoon narratively imagines the monsoon season from a macro perspective: as it undergoes a ‘generation’ of excess drying and flooding, and ultimately, fading and disintegration.

His practice is rooted in an innermost relationship with the act of listening– which he believes offers a distinctly earnest capability to observe and reflect how we interact with our environments. His work often explores the subtleties of gradual manipulation of tone and mood over long durations with the aim of heightening acuity for the listener.

Rovegno is currently pursuing an MFA in Composition and Experimental Sound Practices from the California Institute of the Arts, where he studies with Michael Pisaro-Liu.
