Cartoon Carnival #117: Gay Olde Times

Brooklyn, New York
$14.01 - $17.18 (includes all fees)

It's time for another big batch of archival 16mm (no digital!) animated cartoons from the 1920s through the 1950s, straight from Tommy José Stathes' film archive to Rubulad's silver screen...

Our 117th program is a Pride Month extravaganza! 18+ audience is recommended*...

Queer-coded characters and homoerotic themes will run the show this time around—oftentimes as the main focus, and occasionally as momentary throwaway gags in otherwise unrelated stories. Men in drag? That too; all depicted through the hands and lenses of hetero men animators a century ago. Make of that perspective and bias what you will. Alongside plenty of obscurities, you'll see a few well-known characters pop up such as Mutt & Jeff, Betty Boop, Popeye, Bugs Bunny, and others. Don't miss this!

*IMPORTANT point before you read any further—
The majority of this program will be family-friendly, though the screening will end with a notorious 1920s cartoon that can only be described as the first-ever animated XXX. It's a scream, and it's not for young kids! While children and adolescents are welcome at the program (as they normally are), we will give families with younger attendees a moment to depart—if they so wish—before we run the final film. Thanks for understanding.

NOTE: This will be an *extra long* Cartoon Carnival, featuring more than two hours of film material. We'll have two intermissions instead of one. Guests will enjoy plenty of opportunity to stretch and get more refreshments throughout the program.

TWO SESSIONS: We're hosting TWO back-to-back screenings of *the same set of films.* The first will take place at 3pm, and the second at 7pm. To be clear, the second show will be a repeat of the first.

Be sure to bring all your offbeat film-loving friends out to see these now-rare cartoons the way they were meant to be seen—projected on 'reel' film, and enjoyed with a live audience.

Cartoon Shopping and Film Archive Benefit Sale:
As a fundraiser for the Cartoon Carnival series and our film archiving expenses, we'll have various goodies for sale—such as early animation Blu-rays/DVDs, collectible enamel pins (Betty Boop, Gumby, Koko the Clown, and others) and brand new cartoon character t-shirts in various sizes! Grab some goodies for yourselves or as gifts for friends, while benefiting a good cause.

Rubulad will have bar refreshments and some light snacks will available such as regular and vegetarian hot dogs; there's usually also popcorn. Please support the venue for all drinks consumed. Bar/food are *cash only.*
