16mm Cartoon Carnival #108: Ink & Paint

Brooklyn, New York
$17.18 (includes all fees)

It's time for another big batch of archival 16mm (no digital!) animated cartoons from the 1920s through the 1950s+, straight from the Tommy José Stathes Archives to Rubulad's silver screen!

For this month's installment, we're featuring a very special theme: self-reflexive animated cartoons and early trick films that all focus on creating art, filmmaking, and making animated cartoons! Some notable films in our program will include early silent era works by Ladislas Starevitch, Emil Cohl, J.R. Bray, and Walt Disney—all supplemented with fun and surreal stories featuring favorite characters such as Koko the Clown, the original Tom & Jerry, Gandy Goose, Oswald Rabbit, Popeye, and even Porky Pig. We'll even have some rare behind-the-scenes footage from the Disney and Walter Lantz studios, explaining and showing the animated cartoon production process. You won't want to miss this.

NOTE: This will be an *extra long* Cartoon Carnival, featuring more than two hours of film material, as opposed to our usual ~90 minutes. We'll have two intermissions instead of one, and in the middle of our presentation, we'll be showing a very rare kinescope of an early 1950s kiddie TV show, which invites—and instructs—viewers to draw simple cartoon sketches. We'll provide some basic drawing supplies for viewers, so you too can get in on the fun!

Be sure to bring all your offbeat film-loving friends out to see these now-rare cartoons the way they were meant to be seen—projected on 'reel' film, and enjoyed with a physical audience.

FEATURING ragtime pianist Charlie Judkins, who will be providing ambient mood music as well as live accompaniment for silent era shorts.

Cartoon Shopping and Film Archive Benefit Sale:
As a fundraiser for the Cartoon Carnival series and our film archiving expenses, we'll have various goodies for sale—such as early animation Blu-rays/DVDs, collectible enamel pins (Betty Boop, Gumby, Koko the Clown, and others!) and brand new cartoon character t-shirts in various sizes! Grab some goodies for yourselves or as gifts for friends, while benefiting a good cause.
