thai Lu is a chronically ill, disabled, autistic, and gender-divergent Vietnamese American from a family of refugees. thai works at the intersections of social, cultural, and physical effects of chronic illness, Southeast Asian diaspora, post-war intergenerational suffering, and the concept of metamorphosis.
thai is a cancer survivor with multiple chronic illnesses that do not allow them to safely receive vaccination for Covid and other viruses. They are severely immunocompromised with chronic skin infections that require expensive medical dressings. Their immune system has been too susceptible to risk seeing doctors, therapists, or specialists in-person, or receive any consistent hands-on treatment. Their care, including home care, physical therapy, and other treatments have been on hold since the start of the pandemic, leaving them bedbound for five years to fend for themselves however possible, usually through continuous crowd-funding efforts online.
thai does not qualify for state or federal financial aid and is therefore forced to sacrifice any sense of privacy in an effort to raise funds for their survival, a constant performance against social media algorithms, surveillance, and censorship. In an era where GoFundMe stands as health insurance, this is unsustainable without consistency in community mutual aid - something thai learned growing up in a mycelium network of displaced refugees. We learn to make the most out of nothing.
Having worked for two decades in fashion and design, thai has nurtured precious relationships with fellow artists and alchemists from East to West. their art practice has become an un-simple act of survival and surrender, a visceral expression of grief and isolation. But their connection to abolitionist world-builders has kept them alive and grounded in the in-between.
Despite these circumstances, thai continues to sow their seeds of service. Through Sick in Quarters, a disabled-artist led mutual aid project supporting care work in and for communities in en/forced marginalization, thai helps connect isolated SiQ people to resources and education they might otherwise not be able to access.
sensiโงskins is a website built from thaiโs โbed-theatreโ, an extension of their lived experience in exile. Visitors are presented with a variety of ways to engage in redistribution of disposable income, in exchange for intimacy in the form of witnessing thaiโs slow yet sensual transformation in their perpetual chrysalis.
This benefit is a commemoration of forgotten lives lost to eugenicist capitalism, and a commitment to interdependence, because our liberation is intertwined.
Your contributions will go towards thaiโs medical and living expenses (including 2 lifesaving yet invasive surgeries and a motorized wheelchair), studio rent (giving them a new possible destination), and meal support for the upcoming year.
Tickets are non-transferrable and non-refundable. Thank you for understanding!
