Portland based artist and educator Casual Decay demonstrates delay / looping / "low-fidelity" based compositional techniques in electronic music. This workshop features effects pedals from Chase Bliss, but the techniques demonstrated are applicable across a variety of hardware and software devices. After the workshops students will be able to spend hands-on time in the library studio space using Chase Bliss effects and other effects processors. Feel free to bring your own gear to try out some of these techniques discussed after the workshop!
The lecture will start with a brief history of the pioneering use of tape delay systems by composers including Terry Riley, Steve Reich and Pauline Oliveros. Afterwards Jon will demonstrate how they use delays and low fidelity effects using Chase Bliss pedals with a variety of synthesizers, samplers and drum machines.

Casual Decay is the experimental ambient project of self-taught multimedia designer Jon Nasrallah. Equipped with a biochemistry degree and a background in STEM Education and perceptual studies, Nasrallah approaches his art with the curiosity and discipline of a true sonic scientist.
