Opening Reception: "The Latin Quarter Revue: Behind the Curtain"

Brooklyn, New York
Free

The City Reliquary will host an opening reception on Saturday, May 27, from 6-9 pm, for its new exhibit "The Latin Quarter Revue: Behind the Curtain." Guests can meet guest curator Kirsten Larvick and former Latin Quarter showgirls Francine Storey and Darlene Lawson, who will share their first-hand memories of the captivating cabaret.

The Latin Quarter nightclub originally operated in Times Square from 1942 to 1969. Inspired by the cabarets of the Paris rive gauche, performers included Broadway talent, beautiful showgirls, and major headliners such as Mae West, Ella Fitzgerald, and Frank Sinatra.

This exhibition explores the nightclub era by way of a singular New York cabaret. Here you will find an all-but-lost history, pieced together from performers’ recollections and artifacts in private collections. Together, these fragments offer a glimpse into the midcentury American dream through the eyes of some of the incredible artists who shaped this period.

Kirsten Larvick is director of the award-winning documentary John Hemmer & the Showgirls (2017), which tells the story of John Hemmer, a singer at the Latin Quarter in the 1960s. She is also Associate Producer of Look at Us Now, Mother! (2015), and Additional Editor for Bettie Page Reveals All (2012).
