Heyyy friends! In this class you will learn the basic skills that could save someone's life. Intro to the very basics of CPR (including children and infants), basic life support and simple first aid. This class is FREE OF CHARGE and also hopefully free of the hetero- and cisnormative bullshit you may encounter in more established first aid programs.
Also covered: how to give naloxone and epipens! Who comes when you call 911! If/how EMS and cops and firefighters work for or against you when you really need their help (and not their state-sanctioned BS). And - your questions answered!
Accessibility info - practicing CPR is physically demanding. We do have to physically practice as this skill is all muscle memory. We will take breaks but you can expect to kneel on the floor, use your hands, arms, shoulders, and upper body. Some people like to bring a little pillow to kneel on, floors are hard. We will use mannequins, not each other. Also - come low-scent or even better scent-free!
Content warning - learning CPR does involve talking about situations that involve trauma. I promise I will not show any images or videos with explicit content nor will I tell “battle stories.” I will share with you my personal tactics for adminstering successful CPR without freaking out. If you have other concerns re triggers and content, please contact me!
Please post any questions you'd like answered on the wall here. First aid is vast - tell me the situations you want to be prepared for.
Please note! I am not an official CPR trainer. You will not get an official certificate nor can you put this on your resume. This is more informal and intended for people who can't afford CPR courses and/or who feel crappy in them because they aren't designed for trans people and queers.
Co-facilitating this workshop with me will be Autumn. Autumn is a Trans Queer, advanced and standard first aid instructor, Paramedic trained, and ex-volunteer firefighter.
My credentials: My name is Pike and I’m a queer cis woman and I work in emergency services and I have responded to many CPR calls and other medical emergencies. I have noticed that many of my treasured people lack basic knowledge on this front. I want to share what I know in a non-judgemental and fabulously supportive environment. Come help me make that space and keep us all alive to shine brightly <3
