This workshop outlines different ways to incorporate elements of chance, probability, randomness, and chaos into your synthesis techniques. We’ll break down some of the most esoteric elements of the modular synthesizer and examine ways to make compositions a collaborative conversation between performer and instrument. First, we outline some of the history of using randomness (or perceived randomness) within music and synthesis, and some of the ways they can be applied. Techniques range from noise sources, shift registers, chaotic oscillators, probabilistic sequencers, and self-influencing feedback loops. Tame the unknown, make chaos your friend, and embrace the unpredictable.
