Groove Collective is a Grammy-nominated New York City band founded in the early 1990s by musicians who performed at Giant Step, a weekly underground party in downtown Manhattan that ran throughout the 90s. Originally a ten-plus member collective, the band membership has expanded and contracted from five to as many as fifteen. Their sound is an eclectic mix of various forms of popular dance music, jazz, Latin, hip hop, and sometimes rock. Considered one of the pioneering bands of the early Acid Jazz movement, their style has gone well beyond that category, eluding a singular classification. In 2016 Groove Collective performed at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, in connection with the Museum of Music & Entertainment in New York City, for the exhibit of famous jazz portraits by photographer Herman Leonard.

Groove Collective has released six studio albums, four live albums and numerous compilations on the labels: Warner Bros/Reprise, Universal/Impulse, Shanachie, Savoy, Kufala and others. In 2007, Groove Collective’s album People People Music Music received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Members of Groove Collective backed up Tupac Shakur, and were the house band for the critically-acclaimed movie and album Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool, as well as the subsequent Red Hot + Rhapsody. Groove Collective currrrent and former members have numerous credits including: creating the Yo! MTV Raps theme; working with Curtis Mayfield, Maxwell, Michelle Ndegeocello, Santana, Celia Cruz, Debbie Harry, Sia, Master at Work; and performing with Sugar Hill Gang, Vernon Reid, Guru, Donald Byrd, Grand Master Caz, Money B, Digable Planets, Pharcyde, Natalie Merchant, Ravi Coltrane, Wide Spread Panic, Mark Ribot, Steely Dan…
