BLK w/BEAR + GUESTS
"BLK w/BEAR are like Basic Channel at their most abstract, and after a serious nervous breakdown." Wire Magazine
BLK w/ BEAR (JS Adams/Doug Poplin/PD Sexton) champions broadcast interference, delay and decay, audio bleed, field recordings, and the deconstructed surface noise of altered vinyl recordings. Their most recent release MO RE B ROKEN TH AN Y OU was issued on LRC Records, UK in 2018. SUBJECTIVISTEN (NL) described the album as "Mesmerizing...a collage-like whole where ambient, drones, neo-classical and glitches alternate and complement each other." Compositions for QU19 are: MONOTONE (reinterpretation/deconstruction of The Monotone Symphony, Yves Klein, March 9, 1960 + Theme from A Summer Place, Percy Faith, 1960); SAUT DANS LE VIDE (Leap into the Void, Yves Klein, 1960) and UNRAVEL (including prepared vinyl of Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D major, Maurice Ravel, 1929-1930).

Christopher O. Mathews / Grave Nature
“Ascending” is the debut album by Ambient/Drone/Post-Rock act Grave Nature; composed of tracks that were largely assembled from discrete recording sessions, and then arranged around a principal guitar drone or piano idea pulled from those sessions. The Flag Day Recording album as a whole is intended to loosely evoke the stillness and/or turbulence of aquatic and celestial. Mathews joins an augmented BLK w/BEAR for QU19.

K. Craig is one-half of A.R.C. Soundtracks, an audio/visual duo based in Manchester, UK. Marrying bleak drones, doomy beats, and FX-heavy spoken-word to ritualistic visuals, they are an unsettling encounter. As before, his abstract films will iluminate BLK w/BEAR at QU19.

RENÉE SHAW (VIDEO) + GWYNNE DAVIS (SPOKEN WORD)
Renée Shaw is a video installation and live video performance artist. As a video performer, Shaw responds to an audible beat embracing the phenomenon of synaesthesia. Drawing from a large archive of footage, she manipulates video output through live, spontaneous editing. Like a DJ, she scratches through multiple layers of moving images searching for that perfect mix. The visuals have no hierarchy-there is no beginning, middle or end.

STANTON | PSMITH | PALUCH | WALL
New collaborative performance from members of DC's experimental/electronic/improvisation community
Bev Stanton aka Arthur Loves Plastic, who was born in the Bahamas and raised near Walt Disney World. She has won over a dozen Washington Area Music Awards in the Electronica category. Her music has appeared in shows on the Discovery Channel, VH1, MTV and other cable television networks. Stanton is one of 24 female electronic artists and deejays profiled in Pink Noises: Women in Electronic Music and Sound (Tara Rodgers; Duke University Press, 2010). Ever embracing new technologies, Stanton released a 30-minute download EP created with iPhone apps and made loops of her music available as themes for the Mikrosonic SPC sketchpad app for Android.

Winston Psmith (the "P" is silent) is an American experimental musician, who has spent far too long in the company of machines. He calls himself a "black box" musician, since so much of his sound comes from black boxes with blinking lights. Psmith collaborates with Bev Stanton as Novparolo. Other friends and associates join in on occasion as their schedules and commitments allow - involuntary commitment, in some cases.

Christine Paluch is an experimental electronic composer and preformer, under both the solo PraxisCat and trio Concentric Circle projects. Christine is a DC-based composer using synthesizers, code, and other musical instruments to explore the relationship between synesthesia and urban spaces.

Joe Belknap Wall grew up on the mean streets of semi-rural Scaggsville, Maryland, caught in the half-light between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and was raised in an environment of omnipresent storytelling. With family from Baltimore and Georgia, he had ample opportunity to absorb the rhythms and cadences of a good tale well told, and, after having been given a used typewriter by his often-exasperated mother, unsuccessfully attempted to write a novel at the age of twelve. When he was old enough to get his hands on his first tape recorder, he started recording, and soon was cutting and splicing and making strange landscapes out of found sound. He refined his technique over the years, branching out into modular synthesisers and modern digital sampling.

John Lee Bird is a London-based artist. His work is defined by his distinctive use of line; influenced by pop art and 1950’s instruction and medical manuals yet entirely more detailed and personable. He uses diagrammatic line to make intensely human studies; whether the object be a portrait or a more abstract vision of matters of the human condition.
