THE TIME THAT REMAINS is Palestinian auteur Elia Suleiman’s masterpiece. Using Tati-esque shot design, Suleiman expertly depicts the mundane and darkly amusing scenes of everyday life under occupation. Beginning in 1948, The Time That Remains leads its audience through Nazareth as the country of Israel is being established and explores the now forced identity of “Israeli-Palestinian” to the now minority population of Palestinians.
Though often categorized as political dramas, Suleiman’s clever style and sensibility for physical comedy bring to his works a layer of wit not often seen in films centered around occupation and politics. This semi-autobiographical flick is stacked with some of Palestine’s finest actors including Saleh Bakri of the famous Bakri acting dynasty and is a must see for film lovers looking for an entry point into the canon of Palestinian cinema.
