Have you ever wanted to to build a synthesizer but didn't know where to start?
This basic to intermediate level DIY workshop is for you. Whether you are:
-A total beginner who doesn't know how to solder or anything else DIY but wants to learn
-A tinkerer who's built DIY electronics projects in the past and wants to get started building more complex circuits
or
-A person who wants to start or expand a Eurorack system and save some money by building your own modules.
This workshop will adjust to any skill level or step in your modular journey. Students will select from one or more DIY Eurorack synthesizer module kits designed by local Portland-based DIY synth and electronics education company AI Synthesis. The first part of the workshop will be a soldering 101 course or refresher class, though it's fine to come even if you already know how to solder. Most of the time will be spent building your module kits.
Abe Ingle, Founder of AI Synthesis, will be there to help guide your module build in case you have any questions during the workshop. These include questions about building/soldering technique, audio circuit design in regards to the module or in general, how the module works and how it can be used in patching, or other modular synth DIY questions you may have. If you have issues with your build during the workshop hours Abe can help with in-person troubleshooting. Synth Library Portland facilitators will also be on site to help as much as possible.
NOTE:
1) This is to build one or more synth modules but not a fully standalone usable synthesizer voice. If you are unfamiliar with how modular synths function and interconnect please ask us at info@synthlibraryportland.com to see if this workshop is right for you. We don't want someone to come expecting to walk away with a working full featured synthesizer after building only one module.
2) Similar to the last bullet point, please be aware that you will need your own Eurorack modular case and power supply to house and power your module project. Again, email us at info@synthlibraryportland.com if you have any questions.
3) Module build times depend on the kit and the efficiency/skill level of the builder, so we cannot guarantee that your project will be completed by the end of the workshop. Thus you will need to have your own soldering and build tools at home to ensure you can complete your module. More on those tools here: https://aisynthesis.com/diy-electronics-tools-you-need/
4) In-person build support/troubleshooting is only offered during workshop hours. After workshop hours support is offered only via email as explained here: https://aisynthesis.com/issues-with-your-build/
5) AI002 Mixer (silver version) is out of stock. The AI022 Harmonic Mixer or AI106 West Coast Mixer are good substitutes if you are looking for a mixer.
YOUR TICKET PRICE INCLUDES FULL MODULE KIT. IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION DURING THE WORKSHOP IS FREE, SO TICKET PRICES ARE EQUAL TO AND FULLY REFLECT NORMAL KIT PRICES. THE KIT INCLUDES EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO BUILD THE MODULE BESIDES TOOLS.
FEEL FREE TO BUY MULTIPLE TICKETS/KITS. THIS IS ACTUALLY ENCOURAGED FOR THE SIMPLEST KITS (MULT OR ATTENUATOR KITS USUALLY TAKE LESS THAN HALF AN HOUR).
Price dependent on module kit/s selection
