OCTOBER 12, 2019 | LOS ANGELES, CA — Emotional Hardcore, presented by Albert Samreth at Murmurs is four-course dinner of Khmer-Californian food served alongside a video portrait series Samreth has been working on when visiting home. The portraits focus on non-native plants found around Southern California including decorative plants used for landscaping, commuter plants that proliferate with the Santa Ana Winds, and the diverse, hidden home gardens of immigrants around Southern California.
The title is derived from the name of a genre of music popular amongst a subculture of SoCal teens in the first decade of the millenium who drew upon tenderness, rage, and androgyny to express their angst about growing up in mild, wet winters and hot dry summers filled with strip malls, wildfires, suburban sprawl, and a loose sense of history. Emotional Hardcore’s food, video, and programming channel the surprising, violent, and funny ways development affects culture and ecologies.
Dinner is served in the Murmurs garden.
