Music mixing has evolved dramatically from the earliest recording techniques used over a century ago. From Thomas Edison’s phonograph in 1877—where musicians had to adjust their distance from a recording horn to capture sound— to today’s sophisticated digital audio workstations (DAWs), the journey has been remarkable. We’ve moved from mono recording to the power of stereo and multitrack, providing immense control over every element of a song.
However, with this evolution comes complexity.
One of the biggest challenges facing modern producers is the overwhelming number of options, not only in creating music but also in achieving a polished, professional-sounding mix. The role of the amateur producer has expanded, often requiring skills in creation, mixing, and mastering all at once. It’s in the final stages of this process—the art of balance and finesse—where music can either come to life or fall flat.
These workshops aim to simplify the foundational aspects of audio creation and provide a clear understanding of mixing techniques using accessible tools found in any DAW or live mixer. Whether you're just starting out or looking to improve your mixing skills, this course will help you bring your music into focus, with clarity and balance. This is one of several standalone but related workshops to be presented monthly. A computer is not necessary to attend - you're welcome to watch and learn. That said, you are encouraged to bring your own laptop to receive provided digital resources, and follow along using your own DAW or mixing software. The course will be carried out in Ableton Live 12.
