For this month’s journey into tech-cinema, we’re taking a break from our usual 1995-cyberpunk-ethos to screen Seeking Mavis Beacon (2024, dir by Jazmine Jones), a film which “investigates the disappearance and reexamines the legacy of one of the most influential Black women in technology.” Sitting at the intersection of technology and race, this documentary questions the simultaneous commodification and erasure of Black people in tech spaces, a topic that is as relevant as ever with the exploitation of Black avatars in the age of AI.
