Shadow Kitchen is pleased to welcome filmmaker and photographer Alex Westfall to present “Creative Intrusions into Borrowed Memories,” a program of moving image and photographic work on May 16, 2024 at Coaxial Arts.

Alex Westfall’s visual world is one of lush filmic textures and distinctive composition. Working in film, photography, and writing, her work situates memory, archive, and myth in dreamy and intimate landscapes and imaginative spaces.

At Shadow Kitchen, we will present Alex’s short film works including The Rose of Manila, and a performance that explores recent photographic works and the classroom as a site of exploration, discipline, and freedom.

The Rose of Manila is a speculative portrait of Imelda Marcos, who, as one half of the Marcos regime, would become infamous for embezzling billions from the country to sustain her extravagant lifestyle. In this imagining of her formative years, the fate of a young girl and an entire nation become entangled as the absent mother of a country is born.

Please join us for a screening and performance of work by Alex Westfall, which will be followed by a conversation with Shadow Kitchen’s own Maya e.g. Rudolph and audience Q&A.
