For this month's Shadow Kitchen, artist Meejin Hong will discuss her animated loops and screen her short film Slow Deluge with live musical improvisation by Patrick Shiroishi. The screening will be followed by a low-pressure animation workshop using the "infinite animation" technique in Hong's film. Meejin Hong is an artist and experimental animator deeply rooted in the fine arts. She combines handcrafted animation techniques such as paint-on-glass, stop motion, scratch on film and cel vinyl painting with digital animation. Her films have screened internationally in Japan, Colombia, and England, and domestically at the Ann Arbor Film Festival, Anthology Film Archives, LA Underground Film Festival and Slamdance Film Festival. Commercially, she works as a director, animator and motion graphics designer for music videos, live action films, theatrical productions and live musical performances.
Patrick Shiroishi is a Japanese-American multi-instrumentalist & composer based in Los Angeles who is perhaps best known for his extensive and incredibly intense work with the saxophone. Over the last decade he has established himself as one of the premier improvising musicians in Los Angeles, playing solo and in numerous collaborative projects. Shiroishi may well be considered a foundational player in the city's vast musical expanse.
