Who are you—beneath the noise, beyond the expectations, underneath the performance?

In this 6-week course, we’ll explore what it means to uncover our truest and most creative voice—whether it’s been silenced by fear, shaped by expectations, or simply drowned out by noise—by learning to listen more closely to the one we already have.

This course is for anyone interested in finding or clarifying their creative viewpoint or "voice". Each week, we’ll read and discuss self-portrait poems, learn how to dismantle limiting beliefs, and reflect on our personal tastes and creative instincts. As we go, you’ll craft a self-portrait poem—one only you could write.

You’ll leave with:
* A completed self-portrait poem
* A deeper understanding of your creative voice
* Tools to write (and live) more truthfully

No prior poetry experience required—just a willingness to explore who you are, and say it like you mean it. And although the class will be oriented toward completing a self-portrait poem, you are also welcome to create a self-portrait in a different medium.

Teacher
L-D Song (she/they) is a poetry-forward artist who writes about bodies and lives. Top creative achievement: winning a county-wide haiku-writing competition at age 9 with a poem about snow. She also received the Carter Ross Fiction Award for best work of fiction and worked with the Asian American Writers’ Workshop in 2024 to put on a marathon poetry reading event during New York’s Asian American Literary Festival.
