PERIPHERY Pop-Up Exhibition

Brooklyn, New York
Free

Join us Saturday 2/24 for a pop up exhibition of drawings by artist Kirk Maynard, hosted at PARADICE PALASE.

In the exhibition ‘PERIPHERY’, Maynard seeks to address the marginalization of black people in America. Drawing on media coverage of police being called on people of color, he uses oil pastel mediums to create proxies to present the anxiety felt by people of color in public space.

Maynard is a mixed media artist who is originally from Brooklyn, New York. A second-generation Guyanese-American, Maynard’s work focuses on the political undercurrents of culture and identity in America. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in New York City, San Francisco, and New Jersey. He has also given artist talks at the New Museum, Queens College, and Princeton University. Maynard currently lives and works in Orange, New Jersey.

Maynard’s artistic practice focuses on social, political and cultural issues through the lens of portraiture. Often referencing American social history, his work explores the intersection between identity and politics. He uses a variety of materials and media in his work, while regularly using juxtaposition to highlight different social justice themes.

An artist talk about the work and the themes surrounding will lead the evening around 6:30, with a reception to follow. The show will also be available to view during the day from 1-6 pm for those wishing to really immerse themselves with the work, or for those who cannot attend the reception.
