Description

Sonic moodboarding involves listening to, identifying, and cataloging specific sounds, instruments, progressions, styles, and arrangements as inspiration and reference for one’s own compositional practice.

Under the guidance of Teaching Artist Jopsehine Shetty, participants will learn how to:

• Construct sonic moodboards
• Experiment with production techniques in Ableton Live 11 and 12 to implement ideas from the moodboard
• Convert audio to MIDI
• Sample with Simpler
• Map out arrangements in arrangement view
• Use Live 12's new sound similarity search

Combining analysis, experimentation, and composition practice, participants will create original works and have the opportunity to share their compositions on Soundial's platforms.

Suitable for those with basic knowledge of Ableton Live.

This course will take place virtually via Zoom. All sessions will be recorded and made available to participants.

Syllabus

Week 1: Introduction to Sonic Moodboarding
• What is sonic moodboarding? How can it be used as a tool for conceptualizing and organizing soundscapes?
• Listening to and analyzing songs across different genres: focusing on elements such as tempo, instrumentation, arrangement, timbre, and texture
• Collaborative moodboarding

Week 2: Moodboard Sharing and Initial Techniques
• Presentation and discussion of moodboards
• Introduction to audio analysis techniques: converting audio to MIDI, using Ableton Live 12's sound similarity search, reading a spectrum analyzer

Week 3: Advanced Techniques and Composition Practice
• Sampling with Simpler
• Mapping arrangements in arrangement view
• Using LFOs and automation to modulate and evolve

Class 4: Open Forum and Presentations
• Final presentations with critical feedback and discussion
• Q&A session

Hardware & Software Requirements

• Ableton Live 11 (Standards) or 12 (Standard, Suite, or Trial)
• Computer with the latest Zoom update
• Headphones or studio monitors
• A second screen (optional but recommended)

Instructor Bio

Josephine Shetty is a pop artist commonly known by her solo moniker Kohinoorgasm, as the lead singer of electro pop duo Pride Month Barbie, and on the air as the host of the monthly segment People’s Portal on Dublab. Additionally, Josephine teaches music production at California Institute of the Arts and often partners with other organizations to conduct production related workshops and artist talks. Josephine was born and raised in Los Angeles in 1993, and she enjoys absurdity, maximalism, bric-a-brac, sunshine, and popular science books.

Cancellation Policy

Ticket holders have the option to cancel their reservations and receive a full refund if they do so at least 48 hours before the event starts. However, please note that any cancellation requests made within 48 hours of the event start time or after the event has already begun will not be honored.

If you're unable to attend but have a friend who'd love to take your spot, you can transfer your reservation to them before the class begins.

To request a cancellation, please send an email to hi(at)soundial.org with the subject line "Cancellation Request." In the email, include the following info:

• Your full name
• Date and time of the scheduled event

For eligible cancellation requests, we will initiate a refund to the original payment method used during registration. Please allow a processing time of 5-10 days for the refund to be processed.

Soundial reserves the right to cancel or reschedule events if necessary. Despite our best efforts, unforeseen circumstances such as technical issues or unavailability of instructors may arise, requiring adjustments to the event schedule. We will make every effort to notify you promptly and provide alternative options or refunds as needed.
