OUTRIDER with Anne Waldman
Friday, October 24th
4:00 pm EST

Eugene Lang College, The New School University
In the City of New York

Psychedelic Sangha and the Religious Studies and Creative Writing Programs at Eugene Lang College host poet Anne Waldman for a live (on-campus) screening of the documentary Outrider, followed by a post-screening discussion with Anne Waldman, director Alystyre Julian, and New School instructor Christopher Kelley, Ph.D.

Outrider is a window into the work of fast-speaking poet Anne Waldman and her six decades birthing vibrant communities of poets, performers, and activists—from Greenwich Village, St. Mark's Poetry Project, and Naropa University's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, to Mexico City, Casablanca, and beyond. Guided by ancestors of the Beat generation and poetic kinships with radical female musicians—Patti Smith, Laurie Anderson, Cecilia Vicuña, Meredith Monk—Outrider honors Waldman's role as a visionary word-worker and a transcendent presence, singing out in the ancient bardic tradition the thunderous power of poetry.

IN-PERSON ATTENDANCE IS FREE; HOWEVER, REGISTRATION IS NECESSARY THROUGH THE NEW SCHOOL EVENTS CALENDAR.

ANNE WALDMAN—internationally acclaimed poet, performer, activist, and magpie scholar—has been a force in experimental “Outrider” poetics for over four decades, recognized in the lineages of the Beat, New York School, and Black Mountain traditions while raising the bar as a feminist and cultural activist. Author of more than 60 books, including the classic "Fast Speaking Woman" and the monumental "Iovis Trilogy," as well as most recently "Mesopotopia," her work spans epic poems, essays, performance, opera, and multidisciplinary collaborations. Anne was a co-founder of The Poetry Project at St. Mark’s Church and, with Allen Ginsberg and Diane di Prima, the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University. She remains a highly original “open field investigator” of consciousness, committed to the possibilities of radical shifts of language and states of mind to create new modal structures and montages of attention. Her work is prophetic, multidisciplinary, energetic, passionate, panoramic, and fierce at times.
