Mostly Water (Chris Nelson & Robert Dennis / Sarah Halpern / Kevin Ramsay & Ximena Bedoya

NY
$17.19

Mostly Water is a collaboration between Robert Dennis and Chris Nelson. Though they’ve worked together in other contexts, this new project was undertaken without preconception as to its form and the results continue to surprise them. Combining atmospheric soundscapes, manageable melodies, lyrical left turns, and the misuse of household implements, their program promises to confound as well as enchant.

Faves: Felines; martinis; pushing buttons and twirling knobs
Peeves: Flat nines; dress shoes; and drum triggers

Chris Nelson has been playing in rock bands for over 50 years, appearing on more than 15 albums, and providing lyrics for well over 100 songs in the process. Since the 1980’s he has also performed in an abstract music/performance art context, both solo and with collaborators, appearing at alternative music spaces including Roulette, The Stone, ABC No Rio, Generator, 411, The Outpost, Troost, Chandelier, Sunview Luncheonette, and the Knitting Factory. His evening-length pieces include The Poison Has Done Its Work, and Deformed Bars.
Robert Dennis has been hovering at the periphery of the New York underground since the late 1970’s. On drums he has contributed to decades of fraught and fiery discourse with diverse collaborators including Lester Bangs Birdland; Frank Maya + the Decals; Tara Key; Syd Straw; The Scene Is Now; Fire In The Kitchen; P.G. Six, and is currently working with The Whimbrels.

Sarah Halpern works with light, voice, performance, electric guitar, moving image, objects and paper. She is largely focused on the creation of compressed energy and the articulation of non-rational thought. Her solo recordings have been said to "go beyond the limits of the genres they evoke". (Brooklyn Rail).
Halpern's work has been presented at Anthology Film Archives, Experimental Intermedia, NYFF's Views of the Avant-Garde, The Kitchen, Microscope Gallery, The Whitney Museum of American Art: Dreamlands Expanded and Centre Pompidou among others. She also plays electric guitar in the duo Invisible Scissors, with Rachael Guma.

Brooklyn native Kevin Ramsay (daxophone/electronics) will be joined by Ximena Bedoya on prepared pedal steel guitar in an improvised performance that utilizes concatenative and granular synthesis, blending spontaneous improvisation with noise. Ramsay’s work focuses on unpredictable pairings of acoustic and electronic instruments, exploring new ways to capture and process immersive audio for playback on multichannel sound systems. He regularly collaborates with international artists committed to using sound; most notably Michael Byron, Henry Threadgil, Art Jones, Joan Jonas, Pauline Kim-Harris, Conrad Harris (String Noise), Anne Tardos, Danilio Correale, Maria Grand, Prince Harvey, Emilio Vavarella, Malik Ameer Crumpler, George E. Lewis, and Jon-Carlos Evans.
Ximena Bedoya is an interdisciplinary artist and designer from Perú currently living and working in New York. She performs invocations on the pedal steel guitar, an instrument that is itself alive with ghostly resonance. She uses a variety of tools and preparations to vibrate and intone the space as she explores concepts of chance, impermanence, control, and release. Her current practice focuses on the interconnections between sound, video, and sculptural objects.
