Free! Bob & Teresa's 16mm Movie Night
Our first films of the year include experimental animations, vintage short documentaries, and goofy children's short stories where everything goes wrong.
Titles include:
- Camera Magic - fun demo of special effects, visual tricks and illusions in the 1940s
- Lines Horizontal and Lines Vertical - 1962, An experiment in pure design by film artists Norman McLaren and Evelyn Lambart. Lines made directly onto film, move with precision and grace against a background of changing colors, in response to music specially composed for the films.
- People Soup - 1969, Actor Alan Arkin brings his sons Adam and Matthew to a largely improvised and hilarious look backward into boyhood and a fantasy involving peanut butter, tomato sauce, roosters, and sheepdogs.
- Skyscraper, 1960 - Nominated for an Academy Award, this live-action short film by director Shirley Clarke playfully chronicles the construction of the Tishman Building at 666 Fifth Avenue in New York City. Clarke referred to this work as a musical comedy.
- Lapis - 1966, A house favorite, mesmerizing and exhilarating. James Whitney's LAPIS is a classic work of abstract cinema, a 10-minute animation that took three years to create using primitive computer equipment. Tiny circles oscillate in a kaleidoscopic array, accompanied with Indian sitar music.
- Impasse - 1978, animators Caroline and Frank Mouris created this using millions of Avery labels. In the film, a red arrow and a white dot travel through tessellating layers of shapes and colors, set to a soundtrack by percussionist Roland Miles.
Plus more short films, trailers and surprises, all projected on real film.
Two sets of about 40-45 minutes each, with a bar break stretch in between.
