Kuba Falk \[Poland\] ALIVE AGAIN

With the gesture of planting a tree I want to point out the very importance of such actions if we want to fight climate change. That is overwhelmingly the top solution to do so. At the same time we have to keep in our minds (and plates!) words of Joseph Poore, an environmental researcher at the Queen’s College, University of Oxford: “Without freeing up the billions of hectares we use to produce meat and milk, this ambition is not realisable.” We need to start planting trees now wherever possible, reduce dramatically meat and diary consumption, retrieve farm lands and plant even more trees there.

ALIVE AGAIN is also a tribute to Joseph Beuys and his 7000 OAKS. In fact action of Beuys - initiated in 1982 at Documenta 7 in Kassel, Germany - spread worldwide, reaching New York in 1988. There 37 trees, oaks and others together with basalt stone markers, grow on W 22nd Street in Chelsea.

My appreciation must also be expressed here towards another visionary artist - Agnes Denes. Her TREE MOUNTAIN - A LIVING TIME CAPSULE (1996 to the present) is one of the works that I find extremely valuable from a practical perspective and astonishingly beautiful at the same time.

Nevertheless it doesn’t matter if we plant 11 000 trees or 7000 trees or 1 tree unless we plant them at all.
