~ POSTPONED ~ Creating Perceptual Sound Illusions

$22.46 (includes all fees)

~~ Due to unforeseen personal circumstances, this workshop will be postponed ~~

Description

This workshop explores the intersection of sound design and auditory perception. Participants will learn how psychoacoustic principles can be applied to create perceptual effects that challenge conventional listening.

Led by resident teaching artist Kate Siefker, the session will begin with an overview of auditory perception and psychoacoustics, followed by demonstrations in Ableton Live. Kate will cover techniques such as the Shepard Tone (Shepard-Risset Glissando), the McGurk Effect, Tritone Paradox, Binaural Tones, and Risset Rhythms. These methods can be used to create sonic illusions that alter or distort the listener's sense of pitch, rhythm, and space. Kate will also discuss concepts and applications such as Virtual Pitch, the Auditory Continuity Illusion, the Doppler Effect, and Grain Delay.

Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with these auditory illusions through hands-on exercises, drawing inspiration from artists like Pauline Oliveros and Oneohtrix Point Never.

This workshop is ideal for ambient and experimental musicians, as well as those working in sound design for film, virtual worlds, and installations.

Basic knowledge of Ableton Live is recommended.

Please note: ticket registration closes 30 minutes prior to event start time.
