In this workshop, Huda Asfour will introduce musicians to essential skills for improvising within Arabic music, including maqam, taksim and other improvisational practices. Topics covered will include traditions of improvisation in the SWANA region; oral, instrumental, Qura'an recitations; Arabic music rhythmicity and the relationship between language and melody; deconstructing the concept of Maqam; and syntax and forms in Arabic traditions.
Huda's teaching focuses on skills that strengthen group dynamics, deepen listening capabilities, and broaden the imagination. This workshop is designed for practicing musicians with a good level of mastery of their instruments, and who wish to expand their improvisational language by exploring Arabic musical aesthetics.
